Seven Fareham Nomads swimmers flew the flag for Great Britain by competing in the World Masters Swimming Championships.
The team claimed 12 top 10 finishes including two gold medals, two Championship records, one bronze medal and two medals for placing in the top six.
Claire Tagg, John and Laura Molyneaux, Tony and Jo Corben, Andy Green and Noémie Plumridge all swam superb at the event held in Budapest, Hungary.
John started the meet off with a bang to claim fifth in the 24–29 years 200m backstroke event, taking home the first medal of the competition. Laura raced hard to achieve a sixth place medal in the 400m individual medley in the 30–34 age group category.
Jo, swimming in the 45–49 age group, took to the podium to receive her two gold medals in the 100m and 200m backstroke events – both in Championship records – and a bronze medal in the 100m backstroke. Jo’s gold in the 200m backstroke was ever more impressive by beating former 200m freestyle Olympic gold medalist Claudia Poll from Costa Rica (Atlanta 1996).
Noémie swam lifetime bests in 50m and 100m butterfly placing ninth and tenth respectively. Andy also achieved a personal best time in the 200m freestyle in 2.24.59, and swam in the same lane as Adam Peaty who recently smashed his breaststroke world record at the elite FINA World Championships three week prior.
Claire successfully completed a hat-trick of best times in the 50m butterfly, 100m breaststroke and 200m individual medley showing her versatility across a range of disciplines.
Tony, who is back in the water after recovering from major neck surgery, managed to place 48th in the 50m butterfly in a massive season’s best time of 34.47, as well as 34th in the 100m butterfly.
The Fareham Nomads ladies team also swam a lifetime best in the 4x50m individual medley relay to place eighth in the 120–159 years age category. The mixed team of John, Andy, Noémie and Laura competed for the first time together in the mixed 4×50 individual medley relay to place 11th in the 120–159 age group.
Volunteer coach and committee member Martin Bennell, swimming for City of Southampton, also achieved a sixth place medal in the 50m breaststroke event in the 40–44 age group category.
Head coach and masters competitor John Molyneaux said: “The competition was a fantastic experience to be part of and we are proud to have represented Fareham Nomads and Great Britain.
“Our Masters swimmers juggle full-time work and family life with training sessions so it’s great to see their hard work and dedication pay off at their major competition of the year.
“We are grateful to family and friends who cheered us on from the poolside and to fellow our competitors who made the atmosphere electric.”
